How far can the bonds of loyalty stretch when humanity is spread across the stars? For two friends living on the outskirts of society, loyalty means everything.
Hakon Stillguard is a disgraced former soldier for the DMF, his loyalty and service forgotten when he was no longer useful.
Quentin Quidel is an illegal clone. Both are haunted by their past and live on the run. But their lives are about to be turned upside down.

The DMF is a star-spanning bureaucracy, a government where generals grow rich on the profits of war and every decision is drawn out through countless sub-committees and panel discussions. Across the border of the DMF lie the possessions of the Raecti, an aristocratic regime where the population is taught absolute loyalty to the ruling family.

It’s a time of uneasy peace between the DMF and Raecti, the wounds of the violent Reaction War are still fresh on both sides. But there are rumors that the Raecti are rearming, and the military-industrial machine of the DMF may not respond in time.

A new leader has arisen among the aristocratic Raecti, a woman driven to set right an old act of great injustice. Her obsession with revenge will lead her to place loyalty to the dead over her responsibility to the living, and she will plunge the galaxy into war to satisfy her thirst for vengeance.
Crown Princess Anea D’esseract is a survivor of a violent massacre, the infamous event that triggered the Reaction War. The attack was triggered by a small group of DMF soldiers attempting to capture a suspected terrorist hiding on the Raecti settlement of Ridgehaus Nine.

The troops believed that they were raiding a paramilitary organization; instead, the building they infiltrated was trapped with a series of explosives.
Their assault triggered a chain reaction that wiped out an entire city and poisoned the environment of the moon itself.
Blame immediately fell on the leader of the mission: Hakon Stillguard. Abandoned by his superior officers, Stillguard was charged with war crimes and sentenced to prison, even as conflict with the Raecti spiraled from antagonism to outright war.

Stillguard escaped from prison and began a new life as a bounty hunter, working in the anonymous and semi-legal shadows of the DMF underworld. Over time he collected a group of fellow outcasts and misfits to crew his ship, The Crestfallen. His newest recruit is QQ, a clone with a bounty put on his head by the DMF military.
Now, years later, Anea’s plans for vengeance begin to unfold. Hakon and his crew will be attacked, sabotaged, and hunted. Their bonds of loyalty will be tested, and the intertwined histories of Hakon, QQ, and Anea will be revealed. As lives are lost and corruption is revealed, the truth behind the tragedy of Ridgehaus Nine finally comes to light.
But will it come in time to stop Anea and her quest for revenge?

Set in a world where the slick, almost magical high technology of the elites runs on the relentless labor of the poor, BRUTAL SPACE is the story of a small group of heroes and their desperate attempts to turn back the tides of war.
